FRACTURED STORIES - Narrative Text


Narrative text is a text used to tell things that happen in the unreal time. The main purpose of narrative text is to amuse the readers. Narrative text is written in a chronological order.

1. The Generic Structure

    Here are the generic structures of narrative text.

a. Orientation
    It is used as an "introduction" of the story. It introduces setting, characters, and background of the story.

b. Complication
    Complication is the starting point of the story. Complication must be presented in a chronological order. So, here are the chronological orders in the complication.
    
    1) Problem
        It is where the problem starts.
    2) Conflict
        It is where the problem starts to arise. There will be a suspense between characters.
    3) Climax
        It is where the problem reaches its peak.
    4) Anti climax
        It is where the conflict cools down.
    5) Solution
        It is where the story ends.

c. Resolution
    It is the conclusion of the story. It can be the place where the writer gives a moral story of the story.

2. The Language Feature

Here are the language features of narrative text.
  • It uses simple past tense.
  • It uses action verb.
  • It uses saying and thinking verb.
  • It uses direct and reported speech.
  • It uses conjunction of time.
  • It uses adjectives.
  • It uses pronoun

Here the example of narrative text

Rapunzel


    Once upon a time, there were a couple in a distant land. They wanted to have a daughter. Later on, the wife was pregnant. The baby was a girl. They were so happpy. One time, the wife looked out to the next house. There were lettuces grown in that garden. The wife wanted to eat one of those lettuces. She craved the lettuce so hard that it made her sick. The husband had no choice. He promised his wife that he would bring a lettuce from the next house. Little did he know that the owner of the lettuce garden was a wicked witch.
    The husband tried to steal the lettuce. Alas, he was caught by the witch. The witch demanded a punishment for the husband's deed. The husband could bring the lettuce as long as he agreed to give the baby girl to her. The husband agreed.
    The time had come. The baby girl was gone. She was instantly taken by the witch. She treated the girl well. When she was 16, the witch placed her in a high tower in the middle of a forest. The witch never cut Rapunzel's hair, so the witch can go to the tower by climbing Rapunzel's hair.
    One day, a prince was lost in the forest. He heard a beautiful song. He wondered where the song came from. The song came from a high tower. The prince looked for a way to meet the owner of that beautiful voice. Suddenly, the witch came and said "Rapunzel, bring down your hair". A long hair came down and the witch climbed to that hair. The prince had an idea. In the next day, the prince mimicked the witch's voice and asked Rapunzel to bring down her hair. Then, he climbed to the tower. The two met and fell in love.
    The witch knew about what Rapunzel and prince did. She cut Rapunzel's hair and banished her to the desert. Then, the witch trapped the prince and assaulted him. The prince fell and ran. He ran to the desert. His eyes hurt so he was blind. He shouted "Rapunzel, Rapunzel". Fortunately, Rapunzel heard this and they hugged as the prince laid down on Rapunzel's lap. Rapunzel cried and miraculously Rapunzel's tear had cured the prince. Then, he went away from the desert to go back to the prince's palace. They lived happily ever after.

Below are the generic structures anylysis of Rapunzel's story.

1. Orientation
    It gives a background story on how Rapunzel was trapped in a high tower.

2. Complication
  • Problem : The prince heard Rapunzel who was singing.
  • Conflict :  Rapunzel and prince were caught by the witch.
  • Climax : Rapunzel was banished and the prince was assaulted.
  • Anti climax : Rapunzel met the prince in the desert.
  • Solution : Rapunzel cured the prince.
3. Resolution
    Rapunzel lived happily ever after
